IIMC’s 51st Convocation: 333 Students Conferred PG Diploma in Journalism

New Delhi, Dec 8, 2018:  The Lok Sabha Speaker Smt. Sumitra Mahajan today presented medals and awards to the top performing students of 2017 batch on Indian Institute of Mass Communication at the 51st convocation ceremony in New Delhi.

In all, 333 students were conferred Post Graduate Diplomas by the Chairman, IIMC and Secretary I & B Amit Khare. These included 136 in English Journalism, 64 in Advertising & PR, 45 in Hindi Journalism, 41 in Radio & TV Journalism and Odia (16), Marathi (15) Malayalam (11) and Urdu (5) and Sanskrit (12).

In her Convocation Address, Sumitra Mahajam Speaker, Lok Sabha stressed on value based journalism and said "media draws enormous power, but it also has responsibility of shaping a good society." She appreciated the encouragement being given to journalism courses in Indian Languages, observing that communication becomes most effective when it is undertaken in one’s own language.

Smt. Mahajan also complimented IIMC and the Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth for introducing the first ever Sanskrit Journalism Course. She said "Sanskrit is the mother of many Indian languages and also has close linkages with some other foreign language".

Shri KG Suresh, Director General, IIMC in his report said “In the 9 month diploma program we groom our students to become “industry-ready”. We organize workshops for the students and allocate a lot of assignments to hone their writing capabilities. We also impart technical training to our students so that they are able to produce lab journals, documentaries as well as radio and television programmes on their own.​​​​​​​

Earlier Smt. Sumitra Mahajan, unveiled the plaque of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Marg at IIMC. The institute in its Executive council meeting had taken a decision to name the main arterial road of its campus after Former Prime Minister of India.

IIMC runs courses including English Journalism, Advertisement and Public Relations, Radio and TV Journalism and Hindi Journalism. They also conduct courses like Urdu Journalism, Malayalam Journalism, and Odia Journalism. The institute has its main campus in New Delhi and Regional campus in Aizawl (Mizoram), Amravati (Maharashtra), Dhenkanal (Odisha), Jammu (J&K) and Kottayam (Kerala). Recently, the ministry of HRD has granted the Letter of Intent (LoI) to IIMC to become deemed university under De Novo category.
